Description

The Pope Valley Winery was founded in 1897 by Ed Haus as Burgundy Winery & Olive Oil Factory. A century later in 1997, the Eakle family purchased the historic winery and gave it a new life as Pope Valley Winery. In 2009 the next generation of Eakles stepped in to continue building and furthering the family’s vision for Pope Valley Winery as a fine winemaking establishment. Currently siblings David Eakle, winemaker, and Diana Eakle Hawkins, general manager, are making great strides in bringing Pope Valley Winery to the next level.

WINEMAKER NOTES:

This is a blend of wines made from Eakle Ranch and the Estate fruit. They were hand harvested and sorted, destemmed to tank and held for 5 to 7 day cold-soak. The various lots went through warm to hot fermentations, depending on fruit characteristics and were pressed before dryness to retain the silky, supple texture. Blends were put together early and the wine was aged for 22 months.

TASTING NOTES:

The purple-ruby color is the perfect introduction to this deep, complex wine. The aromas contain ripe blackberry, cool menthol and earthy lycan, the palate is plush and supple reminiscent of juicy black plums, english thyme and cocoa powder, the finish is long and persistent with fine tannins and firm structure. It will knock your socks off now and only improve over the next 15 years.

VARIETALS:

63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Malbec, 15% Merlot
